User Controls configure patient controls for memory, volume control, tinnitus, mute, T² remote control, and Self Check (if applicable), depending upon whether or not the hearing aid contains a physical switch, syncs binaural wireless hearing aids to communicate with each other, controls the amount of VC reserve gain or Tinnitus reserve output available, or enables/disables Self Learning. The hearing aid's physical user control (e.g., rocker switch, push button, etc.) determines the configuration options available. In addition, when fitting binaurally, if the two hearing aids contain different user controls (e.g., push button and digital rotary), some options (e.g., Memory) may only display for the applicable ear side. Wireless hearing aids can be synced together and if a Best Fit is performed on both devices, all ear to ear features are automatically enabled. If an adjustment made during a binaural fitting results in a hearing aid configuration that no longer supports an enabled ear to ear feature (e.g., volume control), that feature will be disabled automatically.
Once the patient controls are configured, specific settings such as memory environments or signals for indicators, if applicable, can be adjusted. See Memory/Environments, Fine Tuning, Indicators, Tinnitus, and Fitting Summary for more information.
Wireless CommunicationWireless Communication
Wireless communication allows the control on each hearing device to act as an activator for both aids simultaneously. In addition, the controls on the right and left aids can be configured for different functionality, providing the patient with maximum flexibility using on-board controls.
Click on the Read Device Settings or Load a Previous Session radio button and then click Start.

| Tip: This screen can also be accessed via Fitting Summary by clicking details under User Controls. |
Inspire automatically defaults to a binaural
view if applicable. To configure only the right or left wired hearing aid, click
or
.

| Note: If there are any differences between the two hearing aids' physical user controls (e.g., push button and digital rotary) which prevent the Volume Control Reserve Gain and Step Size from being configured binaurally, each hearing aid must be configured separately. |
to expand the User Control Settings section if not currently expanded.
| Note: This section is not available if the hearing aid contains no user control and T² is not supported. Only one section can be expanded at a time. Therefore, if VC Reserve Gain and Step Size is currently expanded, when User Control Settings is expanded, VC Reserve Gain and Step Size will automatically collapse. |

| Field Name | Description | Details |
| User Control Type (indicated at the top of the screen per ear side) | ||
|
Rocker Switch |
||
| Memory Change | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the memory and denotes whether or not the memory will be changed binaurally in wireless products. | If only Memory Change is selected, the memory will be controlled via Short Press. If both Memory Change and Volume Control are selected, memory will be controlled via Push and Hold and volume will be controlled via Short Press. Ear to Ear is only available if both hearing aids are multi-memory and the number and location of the memories match between devices, and at least one of the paired hearing aids' physical switch has been configured to control the memory. However, if neither of the paired hearing aids' physical switch has been configured to control the memory but Autophone or Autocoil is selected for one of the memories for one or both devices, Ear to Ear is checked automatically. If one or both memory user control sides are selected, Ear to Ear is checked automatically, therefore, the memory will be changed binaurally. |
| Volume Control | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the volume and denotes whether or not the volume will be adjusted binaurally in wireless products. | If only Volume Control is selected, the volume will be controlled via Short Press. If both Memory Change and Volume Control are selected, memory will be controlled via Push and Hold and volume will be controlled via Short Press. If one or both user volume control sides are selected, Ear to Ear is checked automatically, therefore, the volume will be adjusted binaurally. |
|
Push Button or Sweep Technology |
||
| Memory Change | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the memory and denotes whether or not the memory will be changed binaurally in wireless products. | Only one hearing aid can control the memory or volume, therefore, if Memory Change is selected for an ear side and Volume Control was selected previously for the same ear side, it's automatically unchecked. If the hearing aid contains a Digital or Analog Rotary + Push Button, the push button can only control the memory, therefore, Memory Change is checked automatically and cannot be changed. Ear to Ear is only available if both hearing aids are multi-memory, the number and location of the memories match between devices, and the physical switch at least one of the paired hearing aids has been configured to control the memory. |
| Volume Control | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the volume, selects how the volume control will function, and denotes whether or not the volume will be adjusted binaurally in wireless products. | Only one hearing aid can control the volume or memory, therefore, if Volume Control is selected for an ear side and Memory Change was selected previously for the same ear side, it's automatically unchecked. If fitting wireless hearing aids binaurally and one hearing aid contains a digital rotary configured for Volume Control, this option is disabled. Conversely, if Volume Control is unchecked for the digital rotary, this option is enabled. If Volume Control is selected and then Volume Control is rechecked for the digital rotary on the other hearing aid, Volume Control is unchecked and disabled from the push button. The volume control options available are based on the hearing aid's firmware version and the options selected. The options are Sprinkler Decrease, Sprinkler Increase, Right Raise, Left Lower* (push button only and Volume Control for both ear sides and Ear to Ear must be selected), and Left Raise, Right Lower* (push button only and Volume Control for both ear sides and Ear to Ear must be selected). The default is Sprinkler Decrease. If one or both user volume control sides are selected, Ear to Ear is checked automatically, therefore, the volume will be adjusted binaurally. |
| Tinnitus Level | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the tinnitus, selects how the tinnitus control will function, and denotes whether or not the tinnitus will be adjusted binaurally in wireless products. | This
user control only displays for Z
Series and Xino Tinnitus
hearing aids. If Memory Change
or Volume Control
is selected for an ear side and Tinnitus Level
is selected for the same ear side, tinnitus adjustments
will be made via Push and Hold. If
Memory Change
or Volume Control
is not selected for an ear side and Tinnitus Level
is selected for the same ear side, tinnitus adjustments
will be made via Short Press.
Tinnitus control is only available if Volume Control
and/or Tinnitus Level
is selected for an ear side. The tinnitus control options
available are based on the hearing aid connected and the
options selected. The options are Sprinkler Decrease,
Sprinkler Increase,
Right Raise, Left Lower*
(push button only and Tinnitus Level
for both ear sides and Ear to Ear
must be selected) and Left Raise, Right Lower* (push
button only and Tinnitus Level
for both ear sides and Ear to Ear
must be selected). The default is Sprinkler Decrease.
If one or both tinnitus user control sides are selected,
Ear to Ear
is checked automatically, therefore, tinnitus will be
adjusted binaurally. In addition, if tinnitus
stimulus is disabled via Tinnitus, an alert
displays.

| Memory Change (Sweep Technology Dual Functionality) | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the memory. | This user control only displays for X Series BTE, Ignite BTE, S Series iQ, S Series, and E Series hearing aids that contain a Sweep Technology volume control. If selected, memory will be controlled via Touch. |
| Volume Control (Sweep Technology Dual Functionality) | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the volume and selects how the volume control will function. | This user control only displays for X Series BTE, Ignite BTE, S Series iQ, S Series, and E Series hearing aids that contain a Sweep Technology volume control. If both Memory Change and Volume Control are selected, the volume will be controlled via Sweep. If only Volume Control is selected, volume will be controlled via Sweep or Touch, depending on the volume control option selected. The volume control options available are Sweep, Sprinkler Decrease, and Sprinkler Increase (X Series BTE and Ignite BTE only). The default is Sweep. |
| Surface Control Sleep | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will require the hearing aid to be touched to awake from sleep. This feature prevents adjustments from occurring if the control surface is touched inadvertently. | This user control only displays for hearing aids that contain a Sweep Technology volume control. This option is only enabled if Memory Change or Volume Control is selected. Ear to Ear configuration is not available for this feature. |
|
Digital Rotary or Analog Rotary** |
||
| Volume Control | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will control the volume and denotes whether or not the volume will be adjusted binaurally in wireless products. | If one or both sides are selected for hearing aids that contain a digital rotary, the volume will be adjusted binaurally in wireless products. |
| Features | ||
|
Mute |
||
| Mute | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will mute the hearing aid without having to remove it from the ear or turn it OFF and denotes whether or not mute will be applied binaurally in wireless products. | This feature is only available for select products. The hearing aid battery is still active while Mute is enabled. Ear to Ear is only available if one hearing aid contains a push button or Sweep Technology. If one or both mute user control sides are selected, Ear to Ear is checked automatically, therefore, mute will be applied binaurally. |
|
T²** |
||
| T² Remote Control | Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will accept telephone touch tones to control volume level, memory, tinnitus level, mute, and wake. | This
feature is available on most wired products. Click
to view the touch tone instructions for the patient.
|
|
Self Check |
||
| User-Initiated Self Check | Indicates which ear side(s) will initiate the Self Check diagnostic and denotes whether or not the Self Check diagnostic will be initiated binaurally in wireless products. | This feature is only available on products that support Self Check. If a hearing aid has no baseline, this option is disabled. Ear to Ear is only available if both hearing aids support Self Check, a baseline has been stored in each device, and User-Initiated Self Check has been selected for both aids. If User-Initiated Self Check is selected for both sides, Ear to Ear is checked automatically, therefore, Self Check will be initiated binaurally. If only one side is selected, Ear to Ear is disabled. |
| Note: How each user control is configured (e.g., Push and Hold, Short Press, etc.) is described in the top portion of the screen and if Ear to Ear is enabled for a specific feature, red and/or blue arrows point to the applicable ear side(s). If a feature is disabled or is not supported, dashes (....) or "N/A" display, respectively. Ear to Ear is only available for wireless products (except Halo) but is not available in monaural fittings if the hearing aid has never been paired or when simulating one wireless hearing aid. |

| Note: This button is only available for select products. |
to expand the VC Reserve Gain and Step Size or Tinnitus Reserve Output Range and Step Size section.
| Note: These drop down lists are only available if Volume Control, Tinnitus Level, or T² Remote Control was selected via the User Control Settings section, or the SurfLink Remote Control or SurfLink Mobile was enabled via Accessories. The options available for step size are 2 dB and 4 dB. If fitting wireless products binaurally, the VC step size can only be set independently if both Ear to Ear Volume Control and all wireless remote control devices are disabled. The tinnitus step size can only be set independently if Ear to Ear Tinnitus Level is disabled. |

| Note: The options available for reserve gain and output are based on the step size selected. If step size 2 dB is selected, the reserve gain and output options are 0, 2, 4, and 6 dB. If step size 4 dB is selected, which is the only option for Halo products, the reserve gain and output options are 0, 4, 8, and 12 dB. The options available for range are 8, 12, 20, and 40 dB. This number represents the total volume range. By changing the slider on the right, the amount of available gain above and below use gain is adjusted. If the hearing aid contains a digital rotary, only a 2 dB step size is available and the reserve gain options are 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 dB. If the hearing aid contains an analog rotary, step size is not applicable and the reserve gain is always 8 dB. If fitting wireless products binaurally, the VC reserve gain can only be set independently if both Ear to Ear Volume Control and all wireless remote control devices are disabled. The tinnitus reserve output can only be set independently if Ear to Ear Tinnitus Level is disabled. User volume control for touch tone phones (T²) can be adjusted via this screen. |
| Note: The programmed response of the hearing aid may impact the default reserve gain or output value, but the amount of reserve gain or output can be adjusted. If the reserve gain or output is increased and a decrease in the frequency response in one or more channels or bands is required to accommodate the selected value, a message displays. Click Continue to increase the reserve gain or output and alter the frequency response of the hearing aid, or click Cancel to cancel increasing the reserve gain or output. |
