User Controls
User Controls configure and demonstrate patient controls for volume control, program, tinnitus, balance control, mute, accessory stream, manual alert, sleep mode, Smart Assistant, Edge Mode+, offline mode, autophone programs, and T2 remote control, depending upon whether or not the hearing aid contains a physical switch, syncs binaural wireless hearing aids to communicate with each other, manages power-on delay and phone calls, controls the amount of VC reserve gain or Tinnitus reserve output available, or turns level resets on/off. The hearing aid's physical user control (e.g., rocker switch, push button, etc.) determines the configuration options available. Wireless hearing aids can be synced together, and if a Best Fit is performed on both devices, all ear to ear features are automatically enabled. If an adjustment made during a binaural fitting results in a hearing aid configuration that no longer supports an enabled ear to ear feature (e.g., volume control), that feature will be turned off automatically.
Once the patient controls are configured, specific settings, such as program environments or indicator signals, can be adjusted. For more information, see Programs, Fine Tuning, Indicators, CROS/BiCROS, Tinnitus, and Fitting Summary.
Wireless CommunicationWireless Communication
Wireless communication allows the control on each hearing device to act as an activator for both aids simultaneously. In addition, the controls on the right and left aids can be configured for different functionality, providing the patient with maximum flexibility using onboard controls.
The hearing aids are configured by dragging the desired user control button (e.g., Volume, Program, etc.) and dropping it on the desired ear side function (e.g., Short Press, Push & Hold, etc.). If the user control offers specific functions (e.g., Right Raise/Left Lower, Sprinkler Decrease, etc.), a drop-down list displays to select the desired option. When configuring user controls for volume and/or tinnitus, the options Right Raise/Left Lower, Up/Down, and Sprinkler Decrease are always available; however, Left Raise/Right Lower, Down/Up, and/or Sprinkler Increase are only available if the options are selected via General Preferences. If fitting wireless hearing aids binaurally and one hearing aid contains a push button and the other a rocker switch, Right Raise/Left Lower and Left Raise/Right Lower are unavailable for the push button.
Demo Mode allows the patient to activate the user control function (e.g., Short Press, Double Tap, etc.) and hear the associated indicator if enabled. It also allows you to verify that the patient is actuating the user control correctly, reconfigure user controls, and make global indicator and/or double tap sensitivity adjustments. When demo mode is active, the actual user control function initiated (e.g., volume, program, etc.) is not performed, meaning the device will not increase/decrease the volume, change programs, etc. This feature is only available for Omega AI and Edge AI products with a user control or double tap capabilities, except CROS/BiCROS.

Ear to Ear for Autophone Programs Denotes whether or not autophone programs will be changed binaurally in wireless products. This feature is only available if Autophone or Autocoil is selected for one of the programs and is checked automatically for one or both devices based on how it's configured via Programs. If the hearing aid contains a rocker switch or push button and program user control is not assigned to an ear side function, this feature can be enabled or disabled. However, if one or both program user control sides are assigned, this feature is checked automatically for the compatible ear side(s) configured via Programs and cannot be changed. Therefore, the state of this feature is based on the Ear to Ear setting for the compatible program user control. For Genesis AI wireless products, this feature cannot be disabled. T2
T2 Remote Control Indicates which ear side(s), if any, will accept telephone touch tones to control volume level, program, tinnitus level, mute, and wake. This feature is available on most wired products. Click
to view the touch tone instructions for the patient.Note: Only one user control (e.g., Volume, Program, etc.) can be assigned per ear side function (e.g., Short Press, Push & Hold, etc.). If wired products are configured binaurally, the user control is automatically assigned to both ear sides. If allowed, Ear to Ear can be enabled/disabled per ear side; therefore, a user control can activate both aids simultaneously from only one ear side if desired. However, for CROS/BiCROS devices, Ear to Ear is unchecked and disabled for all user controls. Tip: Click on the user control, and only the functions available will be enabled. Then click on the ear side function to assign it. To remove a user control from an assigned function, click
or drag the user control back to the left. Removing a Volume Up, Volume Down, Tinnitus Level Up, Tinnitus Level Down, Balance function (push button only), Manual Alert, or Sleep Mode (rechargeable products only) automatically removes the corresponding function. In addition, dragging a different user control to a previously assigned ear side function automatically replaces the existing function. - Click Start Demo Mode and a colored border will appear around the 'Assign User Controls' section to indicate that demo mode is active.
Note: This button is only enabled during a live fitting. The Start Demo Mode button changes to Stop Demo Mode. Click Stop Demo Mode to stop the demo. Most menu, navigation, toolbar options, and all other User Control sections are disabled while in demo mode. - Instruct the patient to activate a specific user control function.
Note: If the user control is assigned to the function performed by the patient, a colored border will be displayed around the ear side dropbox and highlighted. If Ear to Ear is checked for that user control, an arrow points to the opposite ear side, and if that ear side is assigned to the same user control, a colored border will be displayed around the dropbox (except Manual Alert). If Ear to Ear is checked for that user control but the other ear side is not assigned to the same user control, only an arrow points to the opposite ear side but the patient will hear the indicator in both ears for NFMI devices. If a user control option is not assigned to the function performed (except Double Tap), a lighter colored border will be displayed around the ear side dropbox. The patient will not hear an indicator. Pro Fit can only detect a Double Tap when a user control is assigned. - Make indicator and/or double tap sensitivity adjustments or reconfigure user controls if necessary.
Note: Indicator level adjustments apply globally to all enabled tone or speech indicators. See Indicators for more information. - Repeat steps 8-9 as needed.
- Click Stop Demo Mode to stop the demo.
Note: Click Edit Indicators to adjust individual tone or speech indicators if necessary. - Click Print in the right hand corner of the Assign User Controls section to print and/or preview the Device Guide if desired.
- Click
to expand the Power-On Delay section. - Select the Delay Length from the drop-down list.

Note: Power-On Delay is a global setting that must always be the same during a binaural fitting session. For 2.4 GHz CROS/BiCROS devices, Power-On Delay is automatically set to Short and cannot be changed. - Click
to expand the Manage Phone Calls section, if available. - Enable or disable answering, declining, and ending phone calls via an iOS or LE Audio enabled phone.
Note: The patient can turn this feature on or off in the My Starkey mobile application. - Click
to expand the VC Range and Step Size or Tinnitus Output Range and Step Size section. - Click on the desired step size button, if available.

Note: The options for step size are 2 dB and 4 dB. If the hearing aid contains a digital rotary, only a 2 dB step size is available. If fitting wireless products binaurally, the VC step size can only be set independently if both Ear to Ear Volume and all wireless remote control devices are disabled. The tinnitus step size can only be set independently if Ear to Ear Tinnitus is disabled. - Drag the slider bars
or click the tick mark to adjust the VC Range (attenuation and reserve gain) and/or Tinnitus Output Range.
Note: The thick, black tick mark in the VC Range represents the programmed use gain. In the Tinnitus Output Range, the thick, black tick mark represents the programmed level of the tinnitus stimulus. For Omega AI, Edge AI, G Series AI, and Genesis AI products, the VC range is fixed; therefore, the attenuation and reserve gain cannot be adjusted independently. Dragging a slider bar
adjusts the range, which cannot exceed 20 dB between the reserve gain and attenuation. If fitting wireless products binaurally, the VC range can only be set independently if both Ear to Ear Volume and all wireless remote control devices are disabled. The tinnitus reserve output can only be set independently if Ear to Ear Tinnitus is disabled. User volume and tinnitus level control for touch tone phones (T2) can be adjusted via this screen.Note: The programmed response of the hearing aid may impact the default reserve gain or output value, but the amount of reserve gain or output can be adjusted. A message displays if the reserve gain or output is increased and a decrease in the frequency response in one or more channels or bands is required to accommodate the selected value. Click Continue to increase the reserve gain or output and alter the frequency response of the hearing aid, or click Cancel to cancel increasing the reserve gain or output. Tip: Press the keyboard's up or down arrow keys to adjust the VC Range and/or Tinnitus Output Range. - Click
to expand the Additional Configuration Options section. - Enable or disable automatic adaptation. If enabled, Edge Mode+ continuously applies the best sound settings as the patient moves from one environment to the next automatically.
Note: This feature is only available for select products and can only be enabled/disabled in a binaural fitting when both devices support Edge Mode+ Adaptation. Edge Mode+ does not have to be assigned to a user control to enable/disable this feature. - Check or uncheck Reset Levels on Program Change to reset or not reset the Volume, Tinnitus Level, and/or Balance back to their default programmed level when a program change occurs.
