Acoustics

Acoustics selects or changes the connector type, tube size, earpiece, earbud type, and/or vent size in standard and custom hearing aids and replaces the receiver in RIC hearing aids. The connector type and tube size can only be changed in BTE hearing aids, and the receiver type (stock or custom cased) and receiver can only be changed in RIC hearing aids. If the receiver changes, all device settings, such as programs, feature settings, fitting formulas, etc., are automatically preserved. Feedback Canceller, Real Ear Measurement, and/or Self Check initializations are reset due to any acoustic changes; therefore, you should run these after the process is complete.

Acoustics DefaultsAcoustics Defaults

If live fitting or simulating RICs, or simulating BTEs, the acoustic options default based on the receiver type and/or receiver selected (RICs) and the patient's audiogram. If the air conduction threshold at 250 and 500 are less than 30 dB and 1000 Hz is less than 60 dB, a stock receiver or thin tube connector with an open earbud defaults. If the air conduction threshold at either 250 or 500 is greater than 30 dB but less than 50 dB and 1000 Hz is less than 60 dB, a stock receiver or thin tube connector with an occluded earbud defaults. If the air conduction threshold at either 250 or 500 Hz is greater than 50 dB or 1000 Hz is greater than 60 dB, a custom cased receiver or earhook with an earmold default. Asterisks represent recommended options.

The initial vent size, which is classified as either No Vent/OccludedNo Vent/Occluded(The hearing aid contains no vent.), Open, SmallSmall (The hearing aid contains either a Half Vent, Mini Vent, 1 Vent, Zero Vent, or Custom Vent with 1V Diameter.), MediumMedium (The hearing aid contains either a 2 Vent, Variable Vent (unplugged), 3 Vent, Custom Vent with 2V Diameter, or Custom Vent with 3V Diameter.), or LargeLarge (The hearing aid contains either a 4 Vent, IROS, Dual Vent, Free Field, IROS E, IROS Vent, 5 Vent, Nugget Vent (GV), or Vent to Faceplate (GV2).), that defaults is based on the average air conduction thresholds at 500 and 1000 Hz. If the average is ≤ 40, Large defaults; if between 40 and 55, Medium defaults; and if ≥ 55, Small defaults. However, in a binaural fitting, if there's one vent size difference between the two aids, the larger size may be selected for both devices. If the vent size changes during a fitting, the revised venting displays the next time the hearing aid is connected. Whenever fitting in a screen with a graphical view (e.g., Quick Fit, Fine Tuning, Programs, etc.), the hearing aid's current acoustic configuration displays in a tooltip by pointing to Acoustics.

SnapFit 2.0 Smart Receiver CableSnapFit 2.0 Smart Receiver Cable

When live fitting a RIC hearing aid with a SnapFit 2.0 Smart receiver cable attached, Pro Fit automatically detects and defaults the receiver type and receiver; therefore, these options cannot be changed. If the receiver type and/or receiver stored in the hearing aid differ from the attached SnapFit 2.0 Smart cable, this screen automatically displays to update the receiver.

  1. Connect and select the desired hearing aid(s) to adjust via Connect.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Click Acoustics and a pop-up window displays.
Note:  This pop-up automatically displays an initial fit if the acoustic options are not set. A different fitting formula can be selected, and a Best Fit is automatically performed.
Note:  Acoustics is available on all Fitting screens with a graphical view except Speech Mapping. However, this screen cannot be accessed from Audiometer, Hearing Aid Test, or Verify Comfort.
  4. Pro Fit automatically defaults to a binaural view if applicable. To adjust only the right or left hearing aid, click Select Right Only or Select Left Only.

Note:  If fitting CROS/BiCROS devices, only the receiver aid can be adjusted; therefore, the side cannot be selected.
  5. Select the acoustic options acoustic options.

    * These fields are disabled if simulating or a SnapFit 2.0 Smart cable is attached. If a SnapFit 2.0 Smart receiver cable is disconnected during a live fitting, the receiver type and receiver fields will not become enabled. If a SnapFit 2.0 Smart cable is reattached but the receiver type and/or receiver stored in the hearing aid is different from the SnapFit 2.0 Smart cable attached, a message to update the receiver displays.

** If acoustic modeling changes were applied due to Feedback Canceller, "Measured" displays.

    Field Name Description Details
Receiver Type* Identifies the receiver type. This feature is only available for RICs.
Receiver* Identifies the receiver. This feature is only available for RICs.
Connector Selects the connector type. This feature is only available for BTEs. The connectors available are based on the hearing aid connected or simulated.
Tube Size Selects the tube size. This feature is only available for BTEs. The sizes available are based on the connector selected.
Earpiece Selects the earpiece type. This feature is only available for select standard products. The types available are based on the hearing aid connected or simulated. An image of the type selected displays.
Earbud Type** Selects the earbud type. For select standard products, this feature is only available if earpiece type Combort Bud is selected. An image of the type selected displays.
Vent Size** Selects the vent size. This feature is only available for select standard products if connector Earhook or earpiece type RIC Earmold or Thin Tube Earmold is selected. The sizes available are based on the hearing aid connected or simulated. Vent sizes are classified as either No Vent/OccludedNo Vent/Occluded (The hearing aid contains no vent.), Open, SmallSmall (The hearing aid contains either a Half Vent, Mini Vent, 1 Vent, Zero Vent, or Custom Vent with 1V Diameter.), MediumMedium (The hearing aid contains either a 2 Vent, Variable Vent (unplugged), 3 Vent, Custom Vent with 2V Diameter, or Custom Vent with 3V Diameter.), or LargeLarge (The hearing aid contains either a 4 Vent, IROS, Dual Vent, Free Field, IROS E, IROS Vent, 5 Vent, Nugget Vent (GV), or Vent to Faceplate (GV2).).
Note:  If viewing binaurally, both hearing aids will be changed. However, if an option is only supported in one ear side, the opposite ear side will not be changed.
  6. If the receiver was changed in step 5, a message to update the receiver displays. Remove the hearing aid(s) from the patient's ear(s).
  7. Click Update (if changing the receiver) or OK and a message that Feedback Canceller, Real Ear Measurement, and/or Self Check initializations will be reset if applicable.
Note:  Click Update receiver and Best Fit or Apply Best Fit if setting the acoustics for an initial fit.
Note:  Do not disconnect the hearing aid(s) from the computer during the change receiver process. The hearing aid(s) is automatically muted if a different receiver is selected. If a different receiver was not selected, the hearing aid(s) is not automatically muted unless muted previously.
Tip:  Click Cancel to cancel the change(s).
  8. Click OK to save the change(s).
Tip:  Click Undo Changes to Acoustic Options to cancel the change(s). Click Cancel to close the pop-up window.
  9. Click Close if the receiver was updated.
  10. Initialize Feedback Canceller, Real Ear Measurement, and/or Self Check if applicable.
