REM Target Match

REM Target Match administers automatic real ear measurements by integrating Pro Fit and Noah 4.5.1 or higher select compliant IMC2 (Inter Module Communication 2) and non-IMC2 (Verifit) API REM equipment to measure and fit hearing aids. A tool guides you through the entire process, which includes setting up and preparing the Real Ear system for testing, calibrating the probe tube, measuring Real-Ear Unaided Gain (REUG), if applicable, measuring Real-Ear Aided Response (REAR), fine-tuning frequency-specific channels, and matching targets. REM Target Match automatically measures and matches at the Moderate input level selected via Target Preferences, with the option to also measure at the Soft and Loud input levels selected.

New Measurement versus AdjustmentsNew Measurement versus Adjustments

The New Measurement workflow performs a complete Real-Ear Measurement (REM) process because no REM Target Match data is available on the devices. Any existing data is cleared before the process begins, ensuring a full measurement from start to finish.

In contrast, the Adjustment process is used when REM Target Match data already exists on one or both devices. Because of this, the system bypasses the Real-Ear Unaided Gain, Real-Ear Aided Response, and Finish steps, allowing existing data to be reviewed and fine-tuned as needed.

When reviewing the most recent data, the graphs show that the REAR-measured curves match the targets for the previously measured inputs. What is displayed in the graph legend depends on whether the most recent data is from manual adjustments only and/or a complete measurement. Hovering over in the lower left hand corner of the fitting graph shows the date(s) with the possibility of up to two groups displaying.

Using VerifitUsing Verifit

The Verifit and Verifit2 are network tools that can be used with Noah or PatientBase. For REM Target Match to identify the availability of these tools, Pro Fit must first scan your network for Verifits via REM Target Match Preferences.

There are only four steps in the new measurement process when using a Verifit (Setup, Aided, Manual Adjust, and Finish), with the possibility of five (Calibration). Real-Ear Unaided Gain (REUG) is always bypassed. These tools use specific stimuli, so this option must be selected before executing the setup. Verifits are not calibrated via Pro Fit, so if the tool has been calibrated, Pro Fit bypasses this step. If it has not been calibrated, this step is included, but it is calibrated via the tool. Verifits also support different input levels, so if the Soft and/or Loud levels selected via Target Preferences are not supported, Pro Fit will choose the level closest to the one it supports. Only the Verifit2 measures both ears simultaneously; the Verifit measures the left aid first, then the right.

  1. Connect and select the desired hearing aid(s) to measure via Connect.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Click REM Target Match and a pop-up window displays. If no REM Target Match data exists, or if existing data is not the most recent, the new measurement process begins. If the most recent REM Target Match data is available and a corresponding office system REM session is accessible, a Review screen appears showing the latest data. Click New Measurement to overwrite the data and start a new measurement, or Adjust to make adjustments to the existing data.
Note:  Pro Fit automatically scans for Real Ear systems installed on your computer. A Scan button displays if Enable Network Scan for Verifits is checked via REM Target Match Preferences.
Note:  This button is enabled during a simulated (Noah only) or live fitting, or when REM Target Match data exists, and a corresponding office system REM session is accessible for one or both hearing aids. It is disabled during any live remote fitting when REM Target Match data is missing from all aids. REM Target Match is available on all Fitting screens with a graphical view except Audiometer, Hearing Aid Test, and Verify Comfort.
Note:  Regardless of the graphical view currently selected, the fitting graph automatically changes to Real Ear Response output and Input Type: Speech and must be changed back to the previous selections, if different, once REM Target Match is closed.
  4. Pro Fit automatically defaults to a binaural view if applicable. To adjust only the right or left hearing aid, click Select Right Only or Select Left Only.

Note:  If fitting CROS/BiCROS devices, only the receiver aid can be adjusted; therefore, the side cannot be selected.
Note: During an adjustment, the previously measured side(s) are selected by default. All ear side selection buttons are disabled when the dialog opens.
  5. Select the Real Ear system from the drop-down list if applicable.
Note:  If using a Verifit, Enable Network Scan for Verifits must be checked via REM Target Match Preferences. Only the Verifits powered on with VerifitLINK enabled display in the list. Click Scan to refresh the list of Verifits if necessary.
Note:  If simulating, 'REM Simulator' automatically displays. If only one Real Ear system is installed, it automatically displays. If more than one is installed, Pro Fit remembers the Real Ear system selected and automatically defaults to that system. Verifit tools are based on the Device Name in REM Target Match Preferences. If the Device Name is blank, the 'Model (Serial Number)' of the Verifit displays in the list.
  6. For Verifit, select the Stimulus from the drop-down list if applicable.
  7. Click Launch to prepare the system for testing. Once the system is ready, a 'green' dot is displayed.
Note:  The hearing aid(s) are automatically muted until the Real-Ear Aided Response (REAR) measurement begins.
Note:  A message will be displayed if REM Target Match data exists in one or both devices during a new measurement. If the data is overwritten but 'Cancel' is selected at any time during the measurement, the previous data is automatically restored.
  8. Click Next to proceed to tube calibration, if applicable.
Note:  If the Verifit has been calibrated, this step is bypassed. Continue at step 15.
Tip:  Click Cancel at any time to discard the current REM Target Match session and all related data.
  9. For all tools except Verifit, place the probe tube on top of the reference microphone. Hold the reference microphone approximately 0.5 meters from the speaker. For Verifit, manually perform the calibration on the console.
  10. Click Start to either calibrate the probe tube or verify the Verifit has been calibrated. For all tools except Verifit, once complete, verify the curves are correct.
Note:  No curves display for the Verifit.
Note:  If the curves are incorrect or the calibration was not verified, click Start to re-run the measurement or retry the verification.
  11. Click Next to proceed to Real-Ear Unaided Gain.
Note:  The Adjustment process does not measure Real-Ear Unaided Gain or Real-Ear Aided Response. Continue at step 20.
Note:  The Verifit does not measure Real-Ear Unaided Gain. Continue at step 15.
Note:  The graph(s) display a predicted unaided curve.
  12. Seat the patient in front of the loudspeaker, approximately 1 meter away. Carefully place the probe tube in the patient's ear. Instruct the patient to remain still and quiet during the measurement.
  13. Click Start to measure the unaided gain in both ears, monaurally or simultaneously, if applicable. Once complete, the Real-Ear Unaided Gain curve will display.
  14. Click Next to proceed to Real-Ear Aided Response.
Note:  The selected target curves are displayed in the graph(s).
  15. Click Max Sound Level and select the maximum sound level the Real Ear system can measure if applicable.
Note:  Pro Fit remembers the selected Max Sound Level and automatically defaults to it.
  16. Click Input Levels and select the input level(s) to measure if applicable.
Note:  The Moderate input level is required; therefore, it cannot be unchecked. If target level None is selected for Moderate via Target Preferences, '65 dB SPL' displays. If target level None is selected for Soft and/or Loud, the checkbox(es) is hidden. Some tools support different input levels, so if the Soft and/or Loud levels selected via Target Preferences are not supported, Pro Fit will choose the closest supported level. Pro Fit remembers the checked or unchecked state of the Input Levels and automatically defaults those states.
  17. Carefully insert the hearing aid into the patient's ear without moving the probe tube. Instruct the patient to remain still and quiet during the measurement.
  18. Click Start to measure the aided response in both ears, monaurally or simultaneously, if applicable. The Measured Pre-Adjustment and Post-Adjustment curves for the selected Input Levels are displayed on the graph as measured, from softest to loudest. For Verifit, a shaded speech region is also displayed. Once complete, the Measured Post-Adjustment curves are matched to the targets.
Note:  The hearing aid(s) are automatically unmuted during the measurement. Once complete, the aid(s) are automatically muted.
Note:  If an input level measured is unchecked, its corresponding curves remain displayed unless the measurement is rerun. If a level that wasn’t measured is checked, only the target curve is shown, but it will be removed once advancing to the next step, unless the measurement is rerun.
  19. Click Next to proceed to Aided Manual Adjust.
  20. To adjust only the right or left hearing aid, click Select Right Only or Select Left Only.
Note:  If no manual adjustments are needed during a new measurement, click Skip to proceed to the last step. Continue at step 24. If no manual adjustments are needed during an adjustment, click Cancel to close REM Target Match.
  21. Make fine-tuning adjustments via Tables.
  22. Click Start to validate the manual adjustments in both ears, monaurally or simultaneously, if applicable. The Manual adjust validation curves for the Input Levels selected are displayed on the graph as they are measured, from softest to loudest. For Verifit, a shaded speech region is also displayed. Once complete, the Manual adjust validation curves are matched to the targets.
Note:  The hearing aid(s) are automatically unmuted during the measurement. Once complete, the aid(s) are automatically muted.
Note:  To reverse all fine-tuning adjustments and return to the Real-Ear Aided Response measurements, click Target Match.
  23. Repeat steps 20-22 if necessary.
  24. Click Next to proceed to the last step during a new measurement, or click Done to close REM Target Match during an adjustment.
Note:  The hearing aid(s) is automatically unmuted.
  25. Click OK to apply the adjustments and close REM Target Match.
Note:  Once REM Target Match is closed, the hearing aid(s) remains unmuted unless it was muted before accessing the tool. If the adjustments were applied, the vertical axis on the fitting graph displays 'Measurement-Based Real Ear (dB SPL).' If Auto Experience was enabled, Pro Fit automatically disables it and sets the Experience Level to the default selected in Target Preferences. Graphs showing either the Real-Ear Aided Response (REAR) measured or the Manual adjust validation curves, matched to the targets for the measured inputs, can be printed on the Fitting Report. If, during the current session, the REM Target Match data is cleared or the acoustic options are manually changed, the graphs can no longer be printed. Real Ear measurements and curves are saved to Noah or PatientBase (Verifit only) if the fitting session is saved.
Note:  If fitting formula DSL v5 was selected, see DSL v5 Patient Preferences for more information.
Tip:  To reverse the measurements, see undo. If reversed, the vertical axis on the fitting graph displays 'Measured Real Ear (dB SPL)' or 'Predicted Real Ear (dB SPL)'. If previous REM Target Match data was overwritten, it's included in the undo; therefore, those measurements are restored. REM Target Match data can also be cleared via the Tools menu.
