FAQ's

• Any electronic device with an Audio Output jack (Analog 3.5mm, Analog RCA, Digital Optical Toslink) can be directly connected to the TV Streamer.

• We suggest the options below during the initial setup.

• No. If a television (or other electronic audio source) does not have either a Toslink or analog audio output available, then the Remote Microphone + may be a better solution to stream audio from the television speaker.

• The optional Toslink Splitter (part# 43019-000) allows two Toslink cables to share one television output jack. The Toslink Splitter is a simple solution when you want both a soundbar and a TV Streamer to share the same Toslink output.

• When initially setting up TV Streamer, a solid blue LED confirms that an electronic audio source is outputting audio at a detectable level and the cable is properly attached to TV Streamer.

• Insert enclosed AC power supply (part# 43010-000) into wall plug and microUSB connector into jack A.

• No. The TV Streamer must always be connected to an external power source.

• Move the rear Mono/Stereo slider switch to the left position. The mono setting impacts all listeners, including binaural hearing aid sets which will receive a mono signal in both hearing aids. The TV Streamer will automatically convert incoming audio to mono, so nothing needs to be done at the audio source.

• Via a line-in cable (part# 43016-000), an Amazon Echo Dot can be directly attached to the TV Streamer. This allows a user to talk to “Alexa” and her responses will be streamed via our Starkey accessory to their hearing aids. With the line-in cable attached, the integrated speaker on the Amazon Echo Dot mutes. Note:  The Amazon Echo does not have a line-out capability.
• Caveats:

• User will need to manually start streaming in their hearing aids prior to receiving Alexa’s voice.

• If user is already streaming audio from their Toslink cable, then Alexa’s voice will not be streamed.

• After Alexa’s voice stops, the hearing aids will remain in a streaming state for an additional 60 seconds before automatically timing out and returning to hearing aid mic only mode. User can also manually stop the stream at any time.

• For a better user experience, the Remote Mic + provides a classic Bluetooth connection to an Amazon Echo Dot or Amazon Echo.

• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and tap Start Stream from the TV Streamer.
• Press Favorite “star” button on Starkey Remote Control. Within Inspire, the Favorite “star” button must be assigned “Accessory Start/Stop” functionality.  
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., a long press on a push button or double tap) can start streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.

• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and tap Stop Stream from the TV Streamer.
• Turn off the TV Streamer.
• Incoming audio signal is not detected from audio source. For example, turn off audio source.
• Press Favorite “star” button on Starkey Remote Control. Within Inspire, the Favorite “star” button must be assigned “Accessory Start/Stop” functionality.
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., a long press on a push button or double tap) can stop streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.

• A phone call will interrupt the TV Streamer audio stream. After a phone call concludes, all streaming stops. If desired, the TV Streamer audio stream will need to be manually restarted.
• Note:  This could be either an incoming call to an iPhone directly connected to hearing aids or to a cell phone connected to hearing aids via Remote Mic +.

• Walking out of range will interrupt the TV Streamer audio stream and streaming stops. If desired, when back in range, the TV Streamer audio stream can be manually restarted.

• The front LED indicator provides helpful information about the TV Streamer:

• Press the button on the TV Streamer.
• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and increase the Streaming Volume.
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., short or long press on a push button) can increase streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.
• Long press volume  button on Starkey Remote Control.
• If electronic audio source output jack is setup for Variable Audio level (e.g., audio output changes when using the volume controls on the electronic audio source), then you can increase the audio output level coming from that output jack.

• Press the button on the TV Streamer.
• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and decrease the Streaming Volume.
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., short or long press on a push button) can decrease streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.
• Long press volume  button on Starkey Remote Control.
• If electronic audio source output jack is setup for Variable Audio level (e.g., audio output changes when using the volume controls on the electronic audio source), then you can decrease the audio output level coming from that output jack. Note:  This option may degrade audio quality.
• Modify the Stream Boost hearing aid memory with ~10 dB lower gain for the patient to use while streaming audio.

• Yes, this can only be done via the Starkey Remote or hearing aid user control. This cannot be done via the Thrive Hearing Control app or via the Starkey streaming accessory.

• No. All audio streaming from a TV Streamer starts with a manual request.

• This may happen if the TV Streamer is independently receiving audio from a cable box or satellite receiver, which remains powered on. To have the audio stream stop when the television is turned off, attach the audio output cable directly to the television.

• Prior to streaming audio for the first time, your hearing aids will need to be associated with each unique TV Streamer.

• Yes, pairing can be done either inside Inspire or outside of Inspire.

• See "Pairing" in the TV Operations Manual for more information.

• Click for pairing instructions via Accessories.

• Power off both the hearing aid and CROS transmitter. Power on only the hearing aid, ensuring the CROS transmitter remains powered off during the pairing process.

• About 6”, but closer is even better.

• From Thrive Hearing Control app, tap the trash icon next to the TV to be deleted.
• From Inspire, click Delete under the appropriate accessory image via Accessories.
• It is not possible to delete a hearing aid pairing directly from the TV Streamer.

• Any hearing aid pairings made after the saved Inspire session will be lost if the saved session is loaded back into the hearing aids. The patient will need to re-pair a hearing aid with the Starkey streaming accessory to recover audio streaming capability.

• The TV Streamer is capable of streaming to unlimited sets of hearing aids.

• Yes. In Accessories, select “Hearing Aid Mic While Streaming” and choose the preferred hearing aid mic level. By default, the Mic Reduced option is applied to hearing aids and means 50% of programmed gain.

• Yes. The hearing aid mic level can be adjusted in numerous ways:

• Remote Control - Short press or button.

• Hearing aid user control - If configured via User Controls.

• Memory change - If Reset Levels on Memory Change is enabled via User Controls, hearing aid mic level resets.

• Thrive Hearing Control app - Microphone Volume slider.

• Evolv AI, Livio Edge AI, Livio AI, and Livio hearing aids.
• It is not compatible with Halo iQ, Halo 2, or Halo hearing aids.
• It is not compatible with 900 MHz wireless hearing aids. These devices are compatible with SurfLink accessories.

• The TV Streamer transmits via a Starkey proprietary 2.4 GHz audio link.

• The Remote Mic + is designed for small electronics output with a typical 1v RMS. This would include laptops, tablets, cell phones, etc. The TV Streamer is designed for large electronics output with a typical 2v RMS. This would include DVD players, cable boxes, televisions, etc. Using small electronics as audio input to TV Streamer will work, but the source audio may need to be elevated.

• We recommend purchasing a Starkey streaming accessory that is appropriate for the patient’s home location.

• Hearing aids can be paired with up to five Starkey streaming accessories.

• Typical operating range is up to 15 meters (~50 feet). Operational range may be reduced by environmental factors, such as obstructions, interference, and human body positioning. Larger operational distances are achievable, though audio quality and connectivity may decrease.

• No. The TV Streamer automatically converts Dolby 5.1 audio input to stereo output.

• No. Exposure to water or excessive moisture may damage the TV Streamer. If the TV Streamer is accidently exposed to water or moisture, then:

• • Power it down

  • Wipe it dry with a soft, absorbent cloth

  • Let it completely dry out before turning it back on

• Yes. On the Edit Accessories screen, tap the pencil icon and type in a unique TV Streamer name.

• StarLink/Starkey Remote is only compatible with Evolv AI, Livio Edge AI, Livio AI, and Livio wireless hearing aids, and TruLink Remote is only compatible with Halo iQ wireless hearing aids.

• StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote requires Evolv AI, Livio Edge AI, Livio AI, Livio, and Halo iQ firmware to properly operate.

• Replaceable lithium coin battery RC2032 for the StarLink remote control and non-replaceable, non-rechargeable lithium-ion battery for the Starkey/TruLink remote control.

• In typical usage, the StarLink remote control battery should last at least one year and the Starkey/TruLink remote control should last 5+ years.

• Yes. When in a Locked position, StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote does not monitor the buttons, thereby reducing battery power requirements. This has an additional benefit of preventing inadvertent hearing aid changes.

• StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote is designed to be used at distances up to arm’s length from hearing aids. Larger operational distances are achievable, though button command latency will increase and wireless connectivity with hearing aids will decrease.

• When multiple remotes are paired to a hearing aid, the hearing aid prioritizes whichever command it receives first.

• Yes, but there may be up to a 15 second delay then transitioning from one TruLink Remote to a different TruLink Remote.

• When a smartphone and StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote are paired to a hearing aid, the hearing aid prioritizes whichever command it receives first.

• Yes. Typically the hearing aid changes will be immediately reflected on the smartphone.

• No. Exposure to water or excessive moisture may damage it. If StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote is accidently exposed to water or moisture, then:

• • Wipe it dry with a soft, absorbent cloth

  • Let it completely dry out before using it

• When in the Unlocked position, StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote will not transmit unless a button is pressed. As long as no buttons are pressed, then StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote will not cause any interference.

• Environmentally, indoors will work better than outdoors.
• Direct line-of-sight from the Remote Control to hearing aids.

• The Remote Control uses Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate with hearing aids.

• Patients without smartphones.
• Patients that prefer mechanical/tactile remote control buttons.
• Patients that prefer simplicity.

• See "Set up your Remote" in the StarLink Remote Control Operations Manual or "Pairing Process" in the Starkey Remote Operations Manual or TruLink Remote Control Operations Manual for more information.

• Power off both the hearing aid and CROS transmitter. Power on only the hearing aid, ensuring the CROS transmitter remains powered off during the pairing process.

• Only one StarLink/Starkey Remote can be paired to hearing aids but up to two TruLink Remotes can be paired.

• Yes.

• No. StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote can only be paired with up to one Left and one Right hearing aid at a time.

• We suggest keeping hearing aids and StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote less than 6” or 15 cm apart. If a hearing aid is too far from StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote, the pairing process may fail. There is no minimum distance between hearing aids and StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote during pairing process.
• Note: It is best practice to keep other Bluetooth devices at least 2 feet or 60 cm away during pairing to minimize possible wireless interference.

• For best results, place smartphone 2 feet or 60 cm (or more) away from hearing aids and StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote during pairing to minimize wireless interference. If you are still having difficulty pairing hearing aids with StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote, then temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the smartphone.

• Hearing aids can be immediately discovered by a smartphone 15 seconds after a StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote button is pressed. To reduce hearing aid discovery time by a smartphone, the StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote can be powered off.

• Hearing aids can be immediately discovered by a Starkey streaming accessory 15 seconds after a Remote Control button is pressed. To reduce hearing aid discovery time by the Starkey streaming accessory, the Remote Control can be powered off.

• Prior to starting the pairing mode on the StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote, open/close the battery door on one monaural hearing aid or both binaural hearing aids. For binaural hearing aids, it does not matter which hearing aid (left or right) is opened/closed first.

• When hearing aids are successfully paired, all previously paired hearing aids will automatically be deleted from StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote.

• Each hearing aid can support up to 5 pairings. This total includes a combination of TruLink Remotes, wireless programmers, iOS devices, and/or Android devices. Once the hearing aid exceeds 5 pairings, then pairings are removed on a first-in, first-out basis.

• For the StarLink/Starkey Remote, pairing can occur either inside or outside of Inspire.

• For the TruLink Remote, all pairing occurs outside of Inspire.

• No. Hearing aids are always enabled to pair with StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Remote.
• Checking Enabled simply exposes “Favorite Button Configuration” for an Advanced TruLink Remote Control.

• "Accessory Start/Stop" is the default for the StarLink/Starkey Remote and “None” is the default setting for the TruLink Remote.

• Favorite button options differ depending on the current hearing aid configuration. For example, if there is no tinnitus stimulus enabled in the hearing aid, then it will not appear in the Favorite button choices. See "Favorite" in the StarLink Remote Control Operations Manual, Starkey Remote Operations Manual, or TruLink Remote Control Operations Manual for more information.

• The Tinnitus Stimulus On/Off feature simply toggles the Stimulus on/off, if available, in the current hearing aid memory. It does not initiate any type of memory change in the hearing aids.

• No. The Favorite button only affects Starkey accessory streaming.

• After hearing aid servicing, the best practice would be to always encourage manually re-pairing the hearing aids with the Remote Control. Though, depending on what is done to hearing aids during servicing, it is possible that hearing aids may still operate with the Remote Control.

• One version supports all global wireless markets.

• Part# 43011-002 for the Starkey Remote.

• Two configurations for the TruLink Remote: Basic (part# 60019-000) and Advanced (part# 60019-002).

• Yes. They are the same part numbers and fully interchangeable.
• TruLink Remote Basic Faceplate (part# 91347-000) and TruLink Remote Advanced Faceplate (part# 91347-002).

• Yes. The StarLink remote control comes with an attached lanyard but for the Starkey/TruLink remote control, it can be purchased separately, if desired. The same lanyard (part# 90974-000) used with the SurfLink Remote can also be used with Starkey/TruLink Remote. See "Lanyard" in the Starkey Remote Operations Manual or TruLink Remote Control Operations Manual for more information.

• The Remote Control does not include an integrated belt clip design.

• Remote Control communicates with hearing aids via Bluetooth Low Energy.

• The Ear Selection Switch is ignored for monaural hearing aids, as the Starkey/TruLink Remote knows what type of hearing aid it is paired with. Upon a button press, the Starkey/TruLink Remote always sends the appropriate left side or right side command and illuminates the appropriate LED.

• The accessible hearing aid memory environments are the same as with a hearing aid user control. At a minimum, this will always include Memory 1 and the StarLink/Starkey/TruLink Custom memory.

• The logo is pad printed on the front housing.
• If the SurfLink or TruLink logo wears off, the remote can still be identified from its back regulatory label.

• Attach USB cable to power adapter, insert AC power supply (part# 43009-000) into wall plug, and microUSB connector into Remote Mic + jack.

• To return the Remote Mic + to a known good state,

• Turn off any active Bluetooth connections so that the status indicator LED is blinking green.

• Press the Volume Up (+), Volume Down (-), and Input Mode buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds. Status indicator LED rapidly blinks red to confirm reset.

• When paired to a monaural hearing aid, the Remote Mic + automatically combines the audio left and right channels to transmit the combined audio in the hearing aid stream.

• Remote Mic + provides a classic Bluetooth connection to an Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot. Placing the Remote Mic + in the Bluetooth input mode allows a user to talk to “Alexa” and her responses will be streamed via our Starkey accessory to their hearing aids. When the Bluetooth connection with the Remote Mic + is active, the integrated speaker on the Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot mutes. When Alexa’s voice shuts down, the hearing aid mics automatically return to hearing aid mic only mode.
• Caveat:

• Remote Mic + input mode must be Bluetooth to interact with Alexa.

• While an Amazon Echo Dot can be directly attached to the Remote Mic + via a line-in cable (part# 43016-000), it has more constraints and is less convenient than using the classic Bluetooth method.

• With your hearing aids active, turn on the Remote Mic +. If audio is available, streaming automatically starts in the hearing aids.
• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and tap Start Stream from the Remote Mic +.
• Press Favorite “star” button on Starkey Remote Control. Within Inspire, the Favorite “star” button must be assigned “Accessory Start/Stop” functionality.  
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., a long press on a push button or double tap) can start streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.

• Note:  This could be either an incoming call to an iPhone directly connected to the hearing aids or to a cell phone connected to the hearing aids via Remote Mic +.

• Open Thrive Hearing Control app and increase the Streaming Volume.
• Use hearing aid user control. If configured via User Controls, a specific gesture (e.g., short or long press on a push button) can increase streaming. Note:  Ear to Ear commands are fully supported.

• Yes, this can only be done via the Starkey Remote or hearing aid user control. This cannot be done via the Thrive Hearing Control app or via the Starkey streaming accessory.

• Yes. With your hearing aids active, turn on the Remote Mic +. If audio is available, streaming automatically starts in the hearing aids.

• No. Without a visual display, it is simplest to reset the Remote Mic + and individually pair desired classic Bluetooth devices again.

• Try this sequence of steps:

1. Delete the actual Bluetooth pairing on the Bluetooth device.
2. Power off and then power on the Bluetooth device.
3. Reset Remote Mic + back to factory settings.
4. Perform the pairing process between the Bluetooth device and Remote Mic + again.

• The Remote Mic + will always stream in Remote Microphone mode and Teleloop mode. If a FM receiver or Line-In is attached, the Remote Mic + will always stream when in those modes. There is no audio assessment done to determine if there is a valid audio source while in these modes.

• This allows a patient to add new phone call functionality. When wearing the Remote Mic +, they can:

1. Answer/reject/terminate phone calls without looking at the phone.
2. Use the Remote Mic + as a voice input during a phone call.

• The behavior below is dictated by Apple iOS audio routing. The red text highlights important limitations during phone calls.
• iOS settings:  General>Accessibility>MFi Hearing Devices.

• Using its female microUSB jack, the Remote Mic + battery can be charged via an AC wall socket, DC power outlet (in a car), a USB connection (on a computer or other electronic device), and a USB connection (using an instant-charger, external battery pack).

• Yes. The user can charge the Remote Mic + while streaming. The user should not wear the Remote Mic + during recharging.

• Typically, Remote Mic + reaches a fully-charged state in about 3 hours.

• While in a low battery state, the Remote Mic + embeds an audible tone sequence in the audio stream every 5 minutes.

• The cell phone ringtone will be sent from the cell phone to the Remote Mic + and then onto the hearing aids. All ringtone controls reside on the cell phone itself.

• This is managed by the smartphone. Typically, we would expect the ringtone to be presented in the hearing aid and allow the user to either accept or reject the incoming call. The paused A2DP audio will return in the hearing aids once the call is rejected or hung up.

• It depends on the phones and their Bluetooth implementations. For the best experience, we suggest:

• Ignoring the second phone call.

• Rejecting the second phone call on the other phone.

• Hanging up the first phone call, and then answering the second phone call.

• Maybe. For best results, lengthen the alert tone to allow sufficient time for streaming from Remote Mic + to hearing aids to start.

• Some smartphone sounds are higher priority than TV Streamer audio. A simple solution is cycle the Remote Mic + input mode to Remote Microphone. This allows the patient to use the Internet, send text messages, etc. on their smartphone without interrupting the TV Streamer audio, while still retaining the phone call interruption feature of the Remote Mic +.

• For the optimal sound quality, the classic Bluetooth radio is disabled when the telecoil is active. Upon exiting Telecoil input mode, the Remote Mic + will attempt to reestablish a Bluetooth connection. Manual reconnection may be necessary.

• If the call is answered on an iPhone, it may directly stream the phone call audio to the hearing aids and your voice input would be the iPhone.
• If the call is answered on an Android phone, you can conduct the phone call on the phone itself.
• You can ignore the call, move the Remote Mic + input mode out of Telecoil to reestablish the Bluetooth connection, and then make an outgoing phone call.
• Note:  During an incoming call, trying to quickly reestablish the Bluetooth connection by exiting Telecoil input mode does not usually work.

• When the optional, specially-designed Combined Power-In/Audio Line-In cable (part# 91259-000) is attached to the microUSB jack on the Remote Mic +, line-in audio streaming becomes available. Other cables may provide an inconsistent experience and are not recommended.

• No. Remote Mic + automatically sets its “Surround” (omni) or “Focus” (directional) modes based on its physical orientation.
• When placed horizontally (on its clip), it will be in omni mode. Other orientations will be in directional mode.

• Remote Mic + improves the signal-to-noise ratio for one-on-one conversations in noisy environments, such as inside a moving vehicle. It can also be used in quieter situations, where a patient wants to improve speech understanding from a TV or in small group conversations.
• It is not recommended for use in noisy group situations, where Remote Mic + might be used in omni mode. There are no special noise cancellation/reduction algorithms applied, so quiet environments work best.

• Evolv AI, Livio Edge AI, Livio AI, and Livio hearing aids.
• It is not compatible with Halo iQ, Halo 2, or Halo hearing aids.

• The Remote Mic + is designed for small electronics output with a typical 1v RMS. This would include laptops, tablets, cell phones, etc. The TV Streamer is designed for large electronics output with a typical 2v RMS. This would include DVD players, cable boxes, televisions, etc. Using small electronics as audio input to TV Streamer will work, but the source audio may need to be elevated.

• Hearing aids can be paired with up to five Starkey streaming accessories.

• When initially setting up SurfLink Media, a solid green LED confirms that an electronic audio source is outputting audio at a detectable level and the cable is properly attached to SurfLink Media. If the patient is still not hearing streamed audio, troubleshoot by changing memories in the hearing aids or by pressing the “star” button (start/stop streaming) on the remote control.

• In general, the Streaming Activation Control on the SurfLink Media modifies the distance that hearing aids will be able to start streaming. It has no effect on the active audio streaming distance, which is fixed and not user adjustable. If a patient is in “Manual” streaming mode, pushes “star” button, and they are outside of Streaming Activation broadcast distance, then no audio stream will be heard. Both “Automatic” mode and “Manual” mode must be close enough to Streaming Activation broadcast distance to activate “streaming.” Once streaming is active, “Manual” mode and “Automatic” mode behave the same.
• Note:  If Streaming Activation Control slider is farthest left (one blue dot), this is a test mode (6”-12” activation distance). Two blue dots typically activates within 4’-8’.

• A SurfLink Remote button push event is not an instantaneous event. It gets routed through the SurfLink Media, which may add a slight delay (up to 5 seconds), on its way to the hearing aids.

1. Press “star” button on the SurfLink Advanced Remote. Within Inspire, the “star” button must be assigned “Stop/Start Audio Stream” functionality.
2. Switch to a hearing aid memory environment that isn’t enabled for audio streaming.
3. Turn off the Audio Source.

• The rear LED indicator provides helpful information about the SurfLink Media:

• Hearing aids with a “” marking cannot stream audio from the top position, as they are incompatible with that audio format. These hearing aids will remain in hearing aid mic mode.

• It is not necessary to specifically pair hearing aids to the SurfLink Media. Though, a professional does need to enable the SurfLink Media via Accessories.
• In use, a SurfLink Media streams audio to all “streaming-enabled” hearing aids within range. Depending on the hearing aid setup, each hearing aid can begin streaming either “Automatically” or “Manually” upon a “Start Streaming” remote control command (“star” button).

• The SurfLink Media is capable of streaming to multiple sets of hearing aids in a typical listening environment.

• Anytime a hearing aid is connected to a SurfLink Media, the hearing aid battery will be discharged at an accelerated rate. Typical hearing aid battery life may decrease by up to 35%, but varies based upon many individual factors.

• If the Audio Source or SurfLink Media are turned off (streaming connection lost), the hearing aids will no longer be streaming, but they will still be in “streaming mode.” Whenever the streaming restarts (e.g. TV or SurfLink Media turned on), then hearing aids will restart streaming without patient intervention.

• SurfLink Media streaming is disabled in telephone memories.

• • Example: Patient has streaming enabled in Memories 1, 2, and 3. If patient is streaming audio in Memory 3, uses the SurfLink Remote to cycle to Memory 4 (which is in rotation), then streaming would stop. Memory cycling to Memory 1 would re-start streaming in both hearing aids.

• Note:  While streaming audio, ear to ear commands are not possible.

• • Example: Assume patient has setup hearing aid Memory 4 to be autocoil or automatic telephone. If a telephone call is received during an active streaming session (e.g. Memory 2), then “phone ear” will enter Memory 4. All streamed audio to “phone ear” will stop during telephone call. “Non-phone” ear (still in Memory 2) will continue streaming at same audio level. After telephone call ends, “phone ear” hearing aid returns to Memory 2 and audio will restart streaming.

• We recommend at most two SurfLink Medias for North America and one for Europe. It is good practice to separate the units by 40 feet (13 meters) or more to minimize unintended interference.

• Valid North America system:  SurfLink Media (Serial number starts with “M”) and SurfLink Remote (Serial number starts with “N”).
• Valid EU system:  SurfLink Media (Serial number starts with “D”) and SurfLink Remote (Serial number starts with “E”).
• Valid Australia/New Zealand system:  SurfLink Media (Serial number starts with “A”) and SurfLink Remote (Serial number starts with “N”).

• (lower switch position): Up to 4000 Hz. All 900MHz hearing aids can stream this format.
•  (upper switch position): Up to 8000 Hz. Only hearing aids marked with this icon can stream this format.

• Set the Mono/Stereo Audio setting to Mono.

• SurfLink Mobile is compatible with all 900 MHz wireless hearing aids. For best performance, hearing aids should always use the most-up-to-date hearing aid firmware.

• Computers may recognize the SurfLink Mobile as an Ethernet capable device (as it runs Ethernet over USB). By default, many computers drop their Wi-Fi connection when an Ethernet (hardwired) connection is established. If this behavior is not desired, then the Networking behavior can usually be customized on the computer itself.

• No. Ear to ear hearing aid commands are disabled when the hearing aids are actively engaged in communicating or streaming from SurfLink accessories: SurfLink Programmer, SurfLink Media 2, SurfLink Mobile, or SurfLink Remote Microphone 2.

• Yes. The SurfLink Media and SurfLink Mobile are designed to work with the same set of hearing aids. On the SurfLink Mobile, the Remote screen can function like the Advanced SurfLink Remote. The Favorite button may be used to Stop/Start streaming of the SurfLink Media.

• The transmission ranges vary based on the required function.

"If you use other medical devices or wear implantable medical devices such as defibrillators or pacemakers and are concerned that your SurfLink Mobile might cause interference with your medical device, please contact your physician or the manufacturer of your medical device for information about the risk of disturbance. The SurfLink Mobile should not be used during an MRI procedure.”

• When two 900 MHz electronic devices are placed in close proximity, the radio frequency (RF) emissions can cause unintended interference with the SurfLink Mobile or vice-versa. On the SurfLink Mobile, this may result in disrupted signals and/or decreased audio quality. In most environments, SurfLink Mobile’s Adaptive Frequency Agility technology adjusts to an interference-free frequency channel to resolve the interference.

However, if the interfering signal either is close enough, puts out a very strong signal, or is very brief in duration, users may notice slight changes in the audio signal quality on the SurfLink Mobile. In most instances, simply moving the SurfLink Mobile farther away from the interfering 900 MHz equipment will resolve any issues.

On rare occasions where there is insufficient available space to separate the interfering equipment or where there is insufficient available space to separate the interfering equipment from the SurfLink Mobile, it may be necessary to replace or adjust the frequencies of the interfering equipment or temporarily stop audio streaming on the SurfLink Mobile.

• Syncing is a two-step process:

• • First, enable the SurfLink Mobile via Accessories.

  • Second, on the SurfLink Mobile, go to Tools>Settings>Advanced Setup>Hearing Devices and sync the hearing aids.

To optimize the product demonstration, follow these steps.

1. Do not wirelessly program with a SurfLink Programmer at the same time.
2. Turn off all nearby SurfLink accessories (e.g., SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 and SurfLink Media 2).
3. Demonstrate in an 8 meter x 8 meter (25’ x 25’) room or larger:

• SurfLink Mobile streams in stereo during Bluetooth (A2DP profile) and line-in streaming. In these two scenarios, the SurfLink Mobile always streams to both hearing devices if binaural hearing devices are synced to the SurfLink Mobile. The right audio channel is sent to the right hearing device and the left audio channel is sent to the left hearing device. If only one of the binaural hearing devices is engaged in the streaming session, only one channel of audio will be heard.
• SurfLink Mobile streams a mono signal during cell phone and remote microphone streaming. For a monaural fitting, the SurfLink Mobile will combine the right and left audio channels and stream both to that hearing device.

• No. The USB connection currently supports only data transfer (e.g., firmware updates) or charging. The microUSB-to-3.5mm Audio Jack Cable (shipped with the SurfLink Mobile) should be used for wired audio output from a computer.

• Increase the audio source output level.
• Maximize audio stream level (from Streaming screen) while decreasing hearing aid volume (from Remote screen) to obtain a comfortable setting. For best audio quality, audio stream level should be set at 75% or higher. Each audio input (including Surround and Focus mic modes) have independent stream levels.

• While streaming cell phone calls, maximize audio stream level (from Phone screen) while decreasing hearing aid volume (from Remote screen) to obtain a comfortable setting. For best audio quality, audio stream level should be set at 75% or higher.

• Adjust the Stream Boost frequency response to optimize sound quality. For example, reduce low frequency gain.

• When streaming audio, Noise Control options are applied to both streamed audio and hearing aid microphone input. If some Noise Control options are enabled, the hearing aid may interpret the streamed audio as undesirable noise and may alter the audio presentation.
• By default, both the Music and Streaming environments disable the Noise Control adaptations in the hearing aid.

Volume is adjusted via the physical buttons on the side of the SurfLink Mobile.

• Currently there are no Bluetooth hearing device systems in the industry that provide sound quality that would be acceptable to medical personnel.

• When the smartphone (e.g., iPhone) uses the HFP+A2DP profile, the smartphone routes its indicator sounds (e.g., SMS/keyboard clicks) through A2DP. Therefore, you will only hear these indicator sounds when already actively streaming A2DP audio from the SurfLink Mobile.

• Hearing aid does not revert to pre-streaming volume levels once the stream stops.

• When using a Hands-Free Profile (HFP) connection, the Disconnect/Connect button on the SurfLink Mobile Remote screen switches between streaming the audio via the SurfLink Mobile and conducting the call via the cell phone itself.

• 

• During a phone call, the Remote Favorite button is replaced with the Disconnect/Connect button. When the phone call is completed, the Favorite button programmed functionality returns.

• In a Bluetooth situation, both the car and SurfLink Mobile are considered “slave” devices to the cell phone, which is the “master” device. Since both can be paired with and used to stream audio from the phone, we cannot predict which Bluetooth device the cell phone will choose by default. In some cases it is first come, first served while in others, it always selects a particular device by default. The best approach is to turn Bluetooth Off on the device you don’t want to use while in the car. For example, if you want to use the SurfLink Mobile in the car, the car’s Bluetooth system should be turned Off.

• If possible, it is best to answer an incoming call via the SurfLink Mobile. There are some cell phones that do not properly route the call to the SurfLink Mobile if you answer a call via the cell phone itself.

• The SurfLink Mobile detects which Bluetooth profiles are supported by the connected cell phone. If the connected Bluetooth device supports both Hands-Free Profile (HFP) and Media Profile (A2DP), such as smartphones, SurfLink Mobile expects both profiles to connect prior to establishing the Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP).
• If for some reason, only the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) connection is established, the SurfLink Mobile is unable to connect to the Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) until the Media Profile (A2DP) connection has been resolved.
• If the cell phone does not support the Media Profile (A2DP), the SurfLink Mobile will automatically connect the Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) immediately after establishing the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) connection.

• The SurfLink Mobile is compatible with a wide variety of cell phones and tablets. Please refer to the SurfLink Mobile Compatibility Chart found on the professional website.

Yes. You will need the following accessories:

• Optional 3.5mm Stereo female-to-RCA male Cable (not available from Starkey)

• Yes. Unlimited SurfLink Remote Microphone 2s can be synced to one set of hearing aids. However, only one SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 can be used at a time with a set of hearing aids.

• Slide the power switch to the off position and then back to the on position.

• No. SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 automatically sets its “Focus” (directional) or “Surround” (omni) modes based on its physical orientation. When placed horizontally (on its clip), it will be in “Surround” mode. Other orientations will be in “Focus” mode.

• No. To temporarily stop audio streaming, simply turn off the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2.

• No. To temporarily stop audio streaming, simply turn off the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2.

• No. Exposure to water or excessive moisture may damage it. If the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 is accidently exposed to water or moisture, then:

• SurfLink Remote Microphone 2: When SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 is off, then:

• Charging is noted by a solid green LED.

• Fully charged battery is noted when LED turns off.

• When SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 is on (streaming), then applying power is noted by a green LED for 2 seconds. Then, the LED slowly blinks blue since streaming is more important than charging.
• Original SurfLink Remote Microphone: When SurfLink Remote Microphone is off, then:

• Charging is noted by a slow blinking green LED.

• Fully charged battery is noted by solid green LED.

• LED slowly blinks red and a unique audible indicator tone is sent to the hearing aids. This indicator tone occurs every 5 minutes until SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 shuts down or until a charging power source is applied.

• Any patient who reports difficulty hearing others in a noisy situation are the most obvious candidates, but patients who generally are in quieter situations should not be excluded. Many SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 alpha participants reported great improvement in speech understanding at home and in other quiet settings.

• SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 improves the signal-to-noise ratio for one-on-one conversations in noisy environments, such as inside a moving vehicle. It can also be used in quieter situations, where a patient wants to improve speech understanding from a TV or in small group conversations.

• When hearing aids are synced, all previously synced hearing aids will be deleted from SurfLink Remote Microphone 2. There is no method to explicitly “delete” synced hearing aids without syncing new hearing aids.

• By default, Stream Boost is disabled for “Speech and Noise” and “Machine Noise”. These can be enabled via Environment Manager for the Stream Boost (and/or Streaming) memory.

• Sync both the receiver and transmitter to the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2.

• When Mini Mobile Adapter is attached to a power source, the LED becomes solid green and charging automatically begins. When power is on, the solid green LED will be interrupted by other LED behaviors. When the battery is fully-charged, the solid green LED turns off.

• In a low battery state, the LED slowly blinks red until the Mini Mobile Adapter shuts down or until a charging power source is applied. While in a low battery state, the Mini Mobile Adapter embeds an audible tone sequence in the audio stream every 3 minutes.

• If Mini Mobile is not explicitly listed on the Accessories screen, then select “Remote Mic” and adjust hearing aid microphone offsets and Stream Boost to the desired settings. These will apply to both SurfLink Remote Microphone 2 and Mini Mobile.

• No. All Bluetooth pairing occurs outside of Inspire. A Bluetooth device (such as a smartphone) and the Mini Mobile Adapter will be directly paired with each other.

• To reset Mini Mobile Adapter back to factory settings, ensure it is powered on and not Bluetooth-connected to other devices (the green LED will be slowly pulsing). Double click the push button so that the LED starts rapidly blinking blue. Press the push button for 12 seconds until LED starts rapidly blinking red. The Mini Mobile Adapter automatically turns off following a reset.

• Terminate any active Bluetooth connections with the Mini Mobile Adapter, resulting in a slowly pulsing green LED. To start the pairing process, put your new Bluetooth device into pairing mode. Double click the push button on the Adapter so that the LED starts rapidly blinking blue. When it appears, select the product name (SurfLink Mini) on your Bluetooth device. A green LED for 2 seconds confirms a successful pairing with the new Bluetooth device.

• First, sync both the receiver and transmitter to the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2. Second, ensure audio source is providing Mono audio. If audio source is providing stereo audio, then the receiver hearing aid will only receive one audio channel (left only or right only).

• During Bluetooth streaming, the Remote Microphone built-in microphones are disabled.

• During Bluetooth streaming, the hearing aid microphones will respond as though they are receiving Remote Microphone streamed audio.

• Nothing. The user continues uninterrupted streaming from SurfLink Media. All SurfLink Mini Mobile streams (including phone calls and ringtones) are equal priority to SurfLink Media and will not interrupt the existing SurfLink Media stream.

• No. To temporarily stop audio streaming, simply turn off the SurfLink Remote Microphone 2.
